Momo dumplings on a plate

Bhaktapur, to the east of Kathmandu, is known for its well-preserved old town, its brick lanes and its Durbar Square. It also makes an easy food day trip.

Plan the day

  • Start early, while the lanes are quiet and the light is good.

  • Walk the old town first, then eat. Momo tastes better after a morning of stairs and cobblestones.

  • Leave time for a rest in a courtyard cafe between stops.

What to eat

Have a steamed plate of momo for lunch, and try juju dhau, the creamy local curd Bhaktapur is famous for, as dessert. It is traditionally served in a small clay pot.

Finding a place

Open the Bhaktapur page on FindMomo to see the momo places listed there, with opening hours, price range and distance from where you are. Hours change, so check before you set out.

Getting there

Buses and taxis run between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. Ask your hotel or a local for the current route and fare before you go.
